Alongside her older brother, Ruth Avery joins a dangerous scrap metal crew in order to pay her way. Together, they spend one brutal winter working the scrap yards during the day and stealing valuable metal from the once thriving factories at night.

With her goal in sight, Ruth finds that the ultimate cost for an education for a girl like her may be more than she bargained for, and she soon finds herself torn between a promising future and the family she would leave behind.

It was only after serving that she began to focus on a career in writing, eventually enrolling in an MFA program and moving out West to UCLA in order to pursue her passion. However, this is more an issue with the script and character development than the direction, which feels richly deliberated and crafted.

Likewise, the cinematography by Dustin Lane is abound in beautifully framed shots and a chilly palate that perfectly conveys wintery strife. Shot handheld on 16mm, the darkly grainy imagery of sparks flying off whirring power tools or run-down roller rinks complete with appropriately crappy-looking pizza perfectly paint a portrait of the subtly depressing Midwestern atmosphere while managing to find waves of restless adolescent energy. The entire experience points to Riegel as a filmmaker to watch, especially for no-holds-barred honesty, whether the picture it forms is positive or painfully bleak.

Her brother steals metal and sells it for scrap, which for Ruth starts to look like a viable income resource. The film, which Riegel has said is semi-autobiographical, explores a lot of issues, including how opioid addiction and loss of work has decimated old factory towns in the Rust Belt, but it also evokes a hopefulness that keeps it from being exploitative.

She must decide between mediocrity and a brighter future. Holler is about financial and emotional survival. The score is spot on. I would have loved to see more than the two songs chosen for the soundtrack.

These moments are hugely impactful. The entire tone of Holler hums when they play.
