What should missionaries major in
After all, your entire focus will be on other people. Lastly, you must have a deep and abiding faith. Upon graduation, most missionary studies majors look to embark upon missions of their own. From Mozambique to Montana, they have the potential to go anywhere and spread their message of faith.
In addition to preaching, missionaries frequently execute non-religious projects to address issues with infrastructure, health and education. Professional missionaries are often given a modest salary and a stipend for housing, transportation and even local taxes. However, it is also common for missionaries to be tasked with fundraising requirements. This is your opportunity to learn how they process through different situations, and how you can bring joy back into learning.
BGU offers a major in Education in Missions while giving the experience of engaging in a Montessori program on campus. Bible Translation is a huge tool in the mission field, as there are still unreached people groups who do not have the Bible in their language. Linguistics is understanding the meaning of language, as this is an important factor in translating the Bible, because you need to understand the context of a word in order to translate it.
BGU does not offer any Linguistics or Bible Translation degrees but does see the need and importance to translate the Bible into other languages of the unreached. Engineering: Many countries have terrible roads with giant potholes which causes public transit to be highly congested. You could use your Engineering degree as a missionary degree, by reconstructing roads while investing in the daily lives of the locals. Agriculture: Missionary degrees in Agriculture provide you with skills to reach out to farmers in countries like Senegal, West Africa, and empower local communities and businesses through greenhouses, fair trade, digging water wells, and farming techniques.
Marketing and Media: Marketing can be anything from making a short video to writing emails and blogs. If you can take one language for four years, wonderful; two languages for two years each, almost as wonderful; or one language for two years, still good. You may never use that particular language overseas, but the practice of learning another language will assist you in whatever language you later will need to learn. While some countries do indeed discriminate against missionaries with ministry degrees, that background and in-depth study of the Word and effective ministry is invaluable.
So how do you reconcile the two? Go to a college that turns out ministers and also offers degree in other areas, including the area that you want, or feel directed to be used in. For example my wife and I both graduated from Bible colleges with the equivalent of at least minors in Bible and ministry.
But our majors are in history and English. We are going into our mission field as teachers. Another aspect to this question is the issue of managing debt or student loans. Increasingly I see many young people who have a clear call to missions but a prohibitive level of debt.
A Doctorate in Missiology focuses on leadership. Individuals with a missiology degree may lead as a pastor, teacher, or as another ministry worker. Missiology is one of the most advanced theology degrees. Seminary, divinity schools, and universities provide this credential. Missions and evangelism are part of the global purpose of the church. The gospel of the Kingdom is spread through missions and evangelism.
It is beneficial for missionaries to be proficient in these areas. Furthermore, it is also beneficial for them to recognize how to practically teach others about missions and evangelism. This degree is not necessary for missions or evangelism. Believers can be successful without it.
Yet, for those who do desire to grow in this area, there are some additional benefits. There are various universities that offer these degrees or degrees similar. Some degrees can be achieved from secular universities. For others, they must be achieved from a Christian Bible and mission institution. The following universities are not the only schools offering these types of degrees. Rather, the list below is a basic guideline to help you choose what type of education and school is best for you.
It is located in Bloomington, Minnesota. After researching various other schools, I personally decided to attend Bethany Global University. Since my time at BGU, I have realized that my decision was the correct one. Learn all you need to know about Bethany Global University here.
Moody Bible Institute is another well-known Christian college. It has locations in Chicago and Michigan. Moody Bible Institute is not a university dedicated solely to missions. Instead, it is a Bible college. The institution does offer short term mission trips to students. Moody is great at training Christians for ministry. Moreover, missions are part of it, but they are not as specifically focused as Bethany Global University.
The following programs listed are not all available programs. I am listing programs that are similar to the main degrees listed previously. Learn more about Moody Bible Institute here. Liberty University is one of the largest Christian universities. It trains students in ministry, as well as practical occupations that can be used in the secular realm.
Liberty University does not specialize in missions. It does do some work with missions through shorter trips. Liberty University is beneficial to graduate with Biblical understanding and a trade job. You could use the trade job on the mission field, however, you may not receive as much specific training in intercultural studies.
The programs that I will be listing are not comprehensive. They are merely some of the few that are available. Learn more about Liberty University here. Missionary degrees are often not necessary to do mission work. There are various opportunities for short term mission work without education. If you desire to be a missionary long term, it is beneficial to get a degree.
This is simply because mission work is difficult. You want to be equipped and ready to face the challenges of culture, country, work, and team dynamics. With a previous education, you will know how to respond in certain situations and what to do to make them better.
Therefore, without education, most people do not last on the mission field. Many people underestimate the difficulties of missions and the raising of financial support that it takes. It is beneficial to get a degree because numerous countries will not let missionaries in the long term.
